The Observatory of Silence
The Observatory of Silence art installation, created by dr. hab. Katarzyna Tretyn from Bydgoszcz University of Technology, was presented during biennial art festival SACO in 2025, in Antofagasta, Chile. It was inspired by OCM.
The artist dr. hab. Katarzyna Tretyn from Bydgoszcz University of Technology (Politechnika Bydgoska) visited OCM in June 2025. The visit was a part of a longer stay in Antofagasta, Chile, where dr. Tretyn, together with other international artists, participated in the Biennial Festival of Contemporary Art SACO. This year’s SACO, version 1.2, took place between June and September 2025 and its theme was “Dark Ecosystems” – the crossover between art and science, exploring the limits of life in extreme conditions. SACO invites artists to display their art in various places all around the Antofagasta city, where the public can get in direct contact with the artists and their art.
The installation of dr. Tretyn, titled The Observatory of Silence, was displayed in an empty, raw room. In the center of the room a solitary sculpture made of hundreds of threads tells two tales: a dark cone coming from the sky to the ground, a white cone growing from the ground up towards the sky. The clean and minimalistic esthetics of the installation invites interpretation and reflection.
Dr. Tretyn is famous for her interdisciplinary installations, paintings, and objects that combine worlds of art and science. In her work, she narrates scientific themes, translating selected astronomical topics into art pieces, mostly made of thread and interplay between light and darkness.
